As a filmmaker, he is much the same as he is as an actor: curious, provocative, eager to dig for a bone of contention rather than bury it. Gordon-Levitt won't take safe for an answer. So Don Jon tends to stumble as it finds its feet. Still, you leave this movie feeling had at instead of had. The experience is elating.
To a degree, “Don Jon” echoes an idea that the film theorist Linda Williams advances toward the end of “Hard Core: Power, Pleasure, and the ‘Frenzy of the Visible,’ ” her revolutionary feminist study of pornographic films and their contradictions. “Pornography as a genre wants to be about sex,” Ms. Williams writes. “On close inspection, however, it always proves to be more about gender.” Mr. Gordon-Levitt effectively translates that thesis into funny, eventually touching and dramatic terms in his movie
Vulgar, hilarious and charming, Gordon-Levitt’s treatise on pornography, male sexuality and relationships can be little pat and simplistic at times thematically, but to be fair, Jon isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed either. And regardless of some of its life-lesson platitudes in its last act—especially some show-don’t-tell follies in key moments—“Don Jon” is funny, deeply entertaining and engaging.
